Of all the beautiful places in Japan and wonderful shrines, Itsukushima shrine is by far one of the most beautiful; its features are grand, and it stands tall, surrounded by majestic waters. Miyajima Island is known best for the shrine of Itsukushima; but is currently under renovation until December 2022. Miyajima literally is translated to “shrine island” in Japanese, because of the well known and renowned floating torii gate that is Itsukushima shrine, which is centuries OLD!

The History OF THE EPIC MIYAJIMA SHRINE ~

Miyajima Island is a historical area to Japan, its said to be an area for seeing “Shinto” and Mount Misen, the highest mountain in Miyajima has been praised and visited by Japanese locals since the early 6th century. Taiya No Kiyomori, said to be the most powerful man in Japan, marked Miyajima as a place to locate his family shrine in the late 1100’s , and had Itsukushima Shrine built.

Vocabulary:

Shinto -  is a polytheistic belief system involving the veneration of many deities, known as kami, or sometimes as jingi. As is often the case in the Japanese language, no distinction is made here between singular and plural, and hence the term kami refers both to individual kami and the collective group of kami.

Yukata: (浴衣) is a Japanese garment, a casual summer kimono usually made of cotton or synthetic fabric, and unlined.
